A classic example of Jackson Pollock's 1949 drip painting technique, featuring a complex web of black, red, and yellow enamel on canvas.
Number 48, created in 1949, represents the mature phase of Jackson Pollock's career. During this period, the artist moved away from traditional easel painting, opting instead to place his canvas on the floor of his studio. This method allowed him to apply paint from all sides, using sticks, hardened brushes, and even directly from the can. The resulting composition is a dense web of lines, drips, and splatters that cover the entire surface of the canvas.
Pollock utilised a combination of oil, enamel, and aluminium paint to achieve varying textures and levels of opacity. The black lines dominate the visual field, creating a sense of movement and energy that draws the eye across the surface. Beneath these dark, sweeping gestures, smaller flecks of red, yellow, and green emerge, providing contrast and depth. The lack of a central focus or traditional perspective forces the viewer to engage with the work as a whole, rather than searching for a specific subject or narrative.
This approach to painting prioritised the physical act of creation. The rhythmic application of paint records the movements of the artist, turning the canvas into a document of his process. By removing the distinction between the figure and the background, Pollock created an all-over composition that challenged the conventions of mid-twentieth-century art. The work remains a primary example of the techniques associated with the New York School, where the spontaneity of the gesture became the primary subject of the painting. The interplay of light and shadow, created by the metallic paint and the layering of colours, adds a physical dimension to the flat surface, inviting close inspection of the individual marks and the complex relationships between them.
