A 1917 figure study by Egon Schiele, featuring a contorted nude form rendered in charcoal, gouache, and watercolour.
Egon Schiele produced this work in 1917, a period when his draughtsmanship reached a high level of psychological intensity. The figure is captured in a contorted pose, with arms raised above the head, creating a sense of physical tension. Schiele uses thin, nervous charcoal lines to define the anatomy, while sparing applications of watercolour and gouache provide subtle tonal variation to the skin. The contrast between the pale, raw paper and the dark, textured rendering of the stockings draws the eye to the lower portion of the composition.
Schiele often focused on the human form as a vehicle for emotional expression. His approach to the nude departs from traditional academic standards, favouring angularity and a raw, unvarnished aesthetic. The subject's gaze is directed away from the viewer, adding to the sense of isolation often present in his portraiture. The artist's signature and date are visible in the lower right, characteristic of his practice during his later years in Vienna.
This print captures the specific texture of the original paper and the delicate layering of the media. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the figure against a neutral background. Schiele's ability to convey weight and movement through minimal means is evident here. The work remains a representative example of his mature style, where the line acts as both a structural element and a means of psychological inquiry. By stripping away extraneous detail, Schiele forces a direct confrontation with the subject, maintaining a focus on the physical reality of the body.
