Description

An atmospheric oil painting of Notre Dame de Paris by Diego Rivera, capturing the cathedral in soft, muted tones during his early years in France.

Painted during his formative years in Europe, this work captures the iconic cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris through the lens of early twentieth-century experimentation. Diego Rivera, before he became known for his large-scale murals in Mexico, spent significant time in Paris, where he absorbed the techniques of the European avant-garde. In this composition, the cathedral emerges from a hazy, atmospheric setting, rendered with a palette dominated by soft purples, muted blues, and earthy browns.

The foreground features the Seine, with the silhouettes of barges and cranes providing a sense of industrial activity that contrasts with the gothic architecture of the cathedral. Rivera employs a technique that prioritises light and mood over rigid structural detail. The brushwork is loose and expressive, suggesting the influence of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist masters who sought to capture the fleeting qualities of light on urban surfaces. The cathedral itself appears almost ethereal, its spires and buttresses softened by the surrounding mist or smoke.

This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's stylistic development as he navigated the diverse artistic currents of Paris. Rather than the bold, flat forms of his later muralist period, this work demonstrates a focus on tonal harmony and the interplay between natural light and man-made structures. The composition balances the heavy, dark forms of the riverbank with the lighter, more delicate treatment of the cathedral in the distance. It is a study of a city in transition, reflecting the quiet observation of a young artist before his return to Mexico to define a new national aesthetic. The work remains a quiet example of his early engagement with European modernism, showing a clear interest in the atmospheric potential of oil paint.

Artist Biography

Diego Rivera

Rivera painted walls. Big ones. The murals at the National Palace in Mexico City cover over a thousand square feet and depict the entire history of Mexico from the Aztecs to the Revolution. He worked on scaffolding, in fresco, for years at a stretch. The scale was political: he wanted art that belonged to the public, not to collectors.

He studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City and spent fourteen years in Europe (1907-1921), absorbing Cubism in Paris and working alongside Picasso, Modigliani, and Mondrian. He returned to Mexico and found his subject: the history, labour, and people of his country, painted in a style that combined Renaissance fresco technique with pre-Columbian imagery and Marxist ideology.

The Detroit Industry Murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts (1932-33) are twenty-seven panels depicting the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant. The workers are heroic. The machinery is beautiful. Henry Ford's son Edsel commissioned them. The business community wanted them destroyed. They survived.

He married Frida Kahlo in 1929. They divorced in 1939. They remarried in 1940. The relationship was mutually unfaithful, politically intense, and artistically productive for both of them. Rivera said Kahlo was the better painter. Whether he believed this or was performing generosity is an open question.

He accepted a commission from Nelson Rockefeller for a mural in Rockefeller Center in 1933 and included a portrait of Lenin. Rockefeller asked him to remove it. Rivera refused. The mural was destroyed. Rivera repainted it in Mexico City. He died in 1957, at seventy.
