A striking wood engraving by M.C. Escher depicting the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome, defined by high-contrast lighting and precise architectural lines.
This wood engraving by M.C. Escher captures the imposing silhouette of the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome. Executed in 1934, the work demonstrates the artist's early focus on Italian architecture and his mastery of the woodcut medium. Escher lived in Italy for over a decade, and his observations of Roman structures provided the basis for many of his graphic works during this period.
The composition relies on a stark contrast between light and shadow. The dark, ink-heavy sky presses against the illuminated stone surfaces of the fortress, creating a sense of weight and volume. Escher employs precise, controlled lines to define the masonry, the arched bridge, and the circular structure of the mausoleum. The cross-hatching technique used in the shadowed areas of the bridge and the lower walls adds texture to the stone, while the simplified forms of the building emphasise its geometric presence.
Unlike his later works, which often explore mathematical paradoxes or impossible geometries, this piece remains grounded in direct observation. It reflects a period where Escher was refining his technical ability to translate three-dimensional architectural forms into two-dimensional prints. The perspective is low, looking up at the structure, which increases the sense of scale. The absence of human figures contributes to the quiet, nocturnal atmosphere of the scene. This print is a clear example of the artist's ability to manipulate light and shadow to create a sense of drama within a static, architectural subject.
