Beschrijving

A classic woodblock print from Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, depicting travellers passing through the Senju pleasure quarter.

This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that redefined the genre of Japanese landscape art. Katsushika Hokusai captures a scene from the Senju pleasure quarter, a location situated along the Nikkō Kaidō road. The composition balances the distant, iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji against the immediate, bustling activity of the foreground.

In the lower right, a group of travellers, likely samurai or officials, carry long red poles as they move past a thatched-roof structure. Their rhythmic, uniform movement provides a sense of narrative progression. The middle ground features a flat, open expanse of fields and waterways, which leads the eye toward the cluster of buildings representing the Senju district. Hokusai employs a clear, linear perspective, a technique he refined through his study of European prints. The colour palette relies on the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, which provides the deep tones of the horizon and the figures' garments. The contrast between the natural majesty of the mountain and the mundane details of daily life is a hallmark of Hokusai's approach to the series. By placing the mountain in the distance, he frames the viewer's experience as one of observation from within the social fabric of Edo-period Japan. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean outlines and carefully registered colour blocks. It remains a primary example of the artist's ability to document the geography and social customs of his time while maintaining a distinct aesthetic vision.

Artist Biography

Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime. Born in 1760 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Hokusai became world-renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is instantly recognisable across the globe and embodies his lifelong fascination with the power of nature. Hokusai’s ability to capture the dynamic tension between beauty and impermanence is a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics and Buddhist philosophy.

Throughout his prolific career, Hokusai produced thousands of prints, sketches and illustrated books. He continually reinvented his style and identity, even adopting over 30 different artist names as his work evolved. His bold compositions, innovative use of perspective and striking colour palettes redefined Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's famed series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji showcases not just technical mastery, but a spiritual reverence for landscape and everyday life. His work depicted everything from serene rural scenes to mythological creatures and bustling cityscapes.

Hokusai's legacy transcended Japan, profoundly shaping Western art during the 19th century through the movement known as Japonisme. Artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler drew direct inspiration from his compositions and sensibilities. Today, Hokusai is celebrated not only as one of Japan’s greatest artists, but as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture. His art continues to captivate modern audiences with its fluid lines, narrative depth and timeless exploration of the human connection to nature.
