Description

A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the coastal station of Mishima, taken from the Cutout Pictures of the Tokaido series.

This woodblock print is a fragment from the series Tokaido harimaze zue, or Cutout Pictures of the Tokaido, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige around 1852. The harimaze format was a popular style of print where multiple smaller images were printed on a single large sheet, intended for the owner to cut out and collect or use for decorative purposes. This specific section depicts the station of Mishima, a stop on the famous Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto.

The composition features a coastal view with boats navigating the water near a rocky shoreline. Hiroshige employs a restrained palette, using deep blue for the sea and a soft, muted tone for the sky, which transitions into a subtle red horizon. The mountains in the background are rendered with simplified, angular forms, characteristic of the artist's later work. The white sails of the boats provide a stark contrast against the dark water, guiding the eye across the frame.

Unlike his earlier, more detailed series such as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, this work demonstrates a shift towards a more graphic and economical visual language. The print captures the essence of the location through minimal lines and flat areas of colour. The presence of Japanese calligraphy in the upper section identifies the location and adds a graphic element to the overall design. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic consumption of art in nineteenth-century Japan, where prints were often treated as ephemeral objects for scrapbooks or personal albums. The work remains a clear example of Hiroshige's ability to convey atmospheric conditions and geographical character through the medium of the woodblock print, maintaining a balance between representational accuracy and stylistic abstraction.
