A refined ink and colour album leaf by Prince Yongxing, featuring a mountain scene paired with elegant calligraphy.
This piece originates from a miniature album attributed to Prince Yongxing, a member of the Qing imperial family and a noted calligrapher. The work presents a characteristic pairing of traditional Chinese brushwork and poetic inscription. On the right leaf, a mountain scene is rendered with soft ink washes and muted colour tones. The composition follows the conventions of literati painting, where the focus remains on the atmospheric quality of the peaks and the suggestion of a secluded dwelling. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the artist's training in classical styles.
The left leaf features elegant calligraphy, which serves as both a visual and literary component of the composition. The characters are executed with a fluid, rhythmic hand, demonstrating the technical proficiency expected of a scholar-official of the period. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of this tradition, where the written word provides context for the visual scene. The use of red seals adds a formal element to the presentation, indicating ownership or authentication.
Prince Yongxing was one of the four great calligraphers of the mid-Qing period. His work often reflects a synthesis of personal expression and adherence to historical models. This album page captures the quietude of the mountain retreat, a common theme in the artistic output of the era. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its historical provenance. The balance between the negative space and the ink-heavy forms creates a sense of depth without relying on Western perspective techniques. This print offers a view into the private artistic pursuits of the Qing court, where painting and calligraphy functioned as essential components of intellectual life.
