A striking sculptural study by Eduardo Paolozzi, featuring a fragmented plaster cast of Michelangelo's David bound with twine.
Eduardo Paolozzi, a central figure in the British Pop Art movement, frequently engaged with the history of classical sculpture. In Michelangelo Duplicate, he deconstructs the iconic visage of Michelangelo's David. By slicing the plaster cast into modular, block-like segments and binding them with simple twine, Paolozzi shifts the focus from the idealised perfection of the Renaissance original to the mechanics of reproduction and fragmentation.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the tension between mass production and the singular art object. The rigid, geometric cuts disrupt the fluid anatomy of the classical face, turning a symbol of humanism into a constructed, industrialised form. The use of string to hold the disparate pieces together suggests a precarious state of assembly, questioning the stability of historical icons when subjected to modern analytical processes. Paolozzi often utilised found objects and industrial imagery, and here he applies that sensibility to the most revered subject matter of Western art history.
As a sculptor and printmaker, Paolozzi was preoccupied with how images circulate and change meaning through repetition. The title itself, Michelangelo Duplicate, acknowledges the nature of the work as a copy of a copy, further distancing the viewer from the original marble. The stark white plaster against the dark background emphasises the sculptural volume and the deliberate, harsh lines created by the segmentation. This piece invites an examination of how we consume classical beauty in a contemporary context, stripping away the aura of the original to reveal the underlying structure of the image. It is a direct, material investigation into the nature of representation, devoid of sentimentality, and focused on the physical reality of the object.
