A detailed etching by Christian Bernhard Rode depicting a sculptural mask from the Zeughaus in Berlin, capturing the expressive features of a dying warrior.
This etching by Christian Bernhard Rode depicts a sculptural mask, one of the many expressive heads adorning the courtyard of the Zeughaus in Berlin. The Zeughaus, a former arsenal, features a series of twenty-two masks of dying warriors, designed by Andreas Schlüter. Rode, a prominent Berlin artist of the eighteenth century, frequently documented the architecture and sculptural details of his city through his printmaking practice.
The work captures the profile of a bearded figure, his eyes closed in a state of finality. Rode employs a precise, rhythmic line to define the contours of the face and the texture of the hair. The shading is achieved through careful cross-hatching, which creates volume and depth within the monochromatic medium. The headband, or taenia, is rendered with particular attention to its decorative border, suggesting the classical influence present in the original sculpture.
As a printmaker, Rode was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to translate the three-dimensional qualities of stone into the two-dimensional plane of paper. This study reflects the eighteenth-century interest in classical antiquity and the preservation of architectural history. The composition focuses entirely on the head, removing the subject from its original context on the building facade to allow for a closer examination of the sculptor's expressive intent. The print demonstrates the intersection of historical documentation and artistic interpretation, providing a clear view of the sculptural detail that might otherwise be obscured by height or distance on the building itself. The paper tone and ink quality are consistent with the period, offering a glimpse into the print culture of Enlightenment-era Berlin.
