A dramatic oil painting by Henry Fuseli depicting a scene from Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, featuring Queen Hermione and her son Mamillius.
Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter who spent much of his career in London, frequently turned to the works of William Shakespeare for inspiration. This circular composition depicts a scene from The Winter's Tale, specifically the moment where the young prince Mamillius entertains his mother, Queen Hermione, with tales of spirits and goblins. The work captures the theatrical and psychological tension characteristic of Fuseli's approach to literary subjects.
In the painting, Hermione stands in a graceful, elongated pose, her figure draped in flowing garments that suggest a classical influence. Beside her, the young Mamillius gestures towards a dark, cavernous opening where spectral figures emerge. The lighting is dramatic, with strong contrasts between the illuminated figures and the surrounding gloom. This use of chiaroscuro directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between mother and son, while the shadowy background adds a sense of unease and supernatural mystery. The circular format, or tondo, focuses the narrative, creating a self-contained world that mirrors the enclosed nature of the courtly setting described in the play.
Fuseli's style is marked by a rejection of the balanced, rational compositions favoured by his contemporaries. Instead, he embraces the irrational and the dreamlike. The figures possess a distinct physical presence, yet they inhabit a space that feels removed from reality. The textures of the clothing and the rugged, rocky environment are rendered with a focus on mood rather than precise detail. This piece demonstrates his ability to translate the emotional weight of Shakespearean drama into a visual medium, prioritising the internal state of the characters over literal representation. The work remains a compelling example of late eighteenth-century British Romanticism, reflecting an interest in the darker, more imaginative aspects of human experience.
