A bold 1987 screenprint by Keith Haring, featuring his iconic graphic style and commentary on consumer culture through the lens of a classic tobacco brand.
Keith Haring produced Lucky Strike in 1987, a period when his visual language had become globally recognisable. The work features his signature thick black outlines and bold, flat colour fields. Haring often utilised commercial imagery to comment on consumer culture, and this piece adopts the branding of a well-known tobacco company to explore themes of addiction and modern life.
The composition is dominated by a stylised figure, rendered with the energetic, rhythmic line quality that defined Haring's practice. The figure is depicted with multiple eyes and a cigarette, with smoke curling upward in a manner typical of his graphic shorthand. The use of a bright, acidic green background contrasts with the red and blue elements, creating a sense of visual urgency. Haring's work frequently bridged the gap between fine art and street culture, and this print reflects his ability to distil complex social critiques into accessible, iconic forms.
This screenprint demonstrates the artist's technical precision in printmaking. The registration of the colours is exact, allowing the bold shapes to sit cleanly against one another without overlapping. Haring's approach to the human form here is non-naturalistic, favouring symbolic representation over anatomical accuracy. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the core elements of the composition. The result is a direct, punchy image that retains the immediacy of his earlier subway drawings while benefiting from the controlled medium of the screenprint. This piece remains a representative example of his output during the late 1980s, capturing the intersection of commercial branding and personal expression that characterised much of his later career.
