A classical allegorical study of Charitas by Dutch Golden Age artist Barend Graat, rendered in ink and wash on blue paper.
This drawing by Barend Graat depicts the allegorical figure of Charitas, or Christian Charity. The composition centres on a seated woman surrounded by four children, one of whom she nurses. The scene follows a traditional iconographic structure, where the mother figure embodies maternal care and selfless love. Graat uses the medium of pen and brown ink with grey wash on blue paper to create a sense of volume and atmosphere. The blue paper provides a mid-tone ground, allowing the artist to use white highlights to define the forms of the figures and the folds of the drapery.
Graat, a Dutch painter active in Amsterdam, was known for his versatility in genre painting, portraiture, and historical subjects. His approach to this allegorical theme is grounded in the classical traditions of the seventeenth century. The architectural elements in the background, including a stone archway and a glimpse of a garden, provide a structured setting for the figures. The interaction between the mother and the children is rendered with a focus on naturalistic gesture and emotional connection. The drawing demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in handling wash to suggest light and shadow, which gives the figures a sculptural quality. The signature at the bottom confirms the attribution to Graat, whose work often reflects the refined tastes of the Dutch burgher class during this period. This piece offers a clear view into the preparatory methods and stylistic preferences of a Dutch master, capturing a moment of domestic virtue through the lens of classical allegory.
