Description
A classical landscape study by David Cox after a composition by Nicolas Poussin. This work features figures by a stone fountain set against a backdrop of large trees with distant blue mountains beyond.
David Cox produced this landscape as a study after a composition by the French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin. During the early nineteenth century, British artists frequently copied the works of Old Masters to master the principles of classical arrangement and atmospheric perspective. This piece demonstrates the interest Cox held in the structured, idealised scenery of the seventeenth century, though he executes it with the more fluid brushwork characteristic of the British watercolour school.
The composition is organised around a group of large, dark trees that occupy the centre and right of the frame. These trees provide a dark counterpoint to the bright, sunlit valley in the distance. To the left, a man is seated by a circular stone fountain, his figure rendered with simple, effective strokes. Other figures are scattered across the foreground, including a woman carrying a basket on her head and a seated couple. These elements provide a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive environment.
Cox uses a palette of deep greens and earthy browns for the foliage and ground, contrasted against the bright blue of the sky and the pale tones of the distant mountains. The light appears to originate from the left, casting long shadows and illuminating a path that leads the eye toward the horizon. This work is a clear example of how nineteenth-century painters adapted classical themes into a more atmospheric and painterly style.
