A characteristic maritime scene by Alfred Wallis, featuring a motor vessel and fish rendered in his signature naïve style on cardboard.
Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties. He utilised scavenged materials, such as cardboard packaging and discarded scraps, to document his memories of the sea. This work, Land, Fish and Motor Vessel, captures his characteristic approach to perspective and scale. Wallis disregarded traditional academic rules, preferring to arrange elements based on their importance to the narrative rather than their physical distance from the viewer.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. A dark, textured band at the top represents the land, while the lower portion depicts the sea. The motor vessel is rendered with a focus on its functional parts, such as the funnels and masts, presented in a simplified, graphic manner. Two large fish occupy the foreground, appearing almost equal in size to the boat itself. This distortion of scale is a hallmark of his practice, reflecting a subjective view of his maritime experiences.
Wallis applied his paint directly, often using a limited palette of greys, blacks, and whites. The visible pinholes at the edges of the cardboard indicate how he displayed his work, often tacking them to the walls of his home in St Ives. His lack of formal training allowed him to develop a visual language that prioritised memory and personal observation over technical precision. This directness caught the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who visited St Ives in 1928 and recognised the authenticity in his work. Today, his paintings remain significant for their raw, unmediated connection to the life of a working mariner and the coastal environment of Cornwall.
