A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei showing a woman threading a needle, featuring characteristic Ukiyo-e patterns and elegant composition.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts a woman engaged in the quiet task of threading a needle while seated upon a verandah. Gakutei, a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, is recognised for his contributions to the surimono genre, which are privately commissioned prints often featuring poetry and high-quality printing techniques. The composition balances the domestic activity of the figure with the decorative patterns of her kimono and the surrounding environment.
The woman is dressed in a layered kimono featuring floral motifs, which contrast with the geometric floor pattern and the red railing of the verandah. Her posture is focused, with her hands raised to guide the thread. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print suggests a connection to literary pursuits, a common feature in surimono prints of the Edo period. The colour palette utilises muted tones, allowing the red accents of the railing and the thread to draw the eye toward the central action.
Gakutei was known for his ability to integrate text and image, creating a cohesive visual experience. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, from the fine lines of the woman's hair to the subtle shading of the clouds in the background. The scene captures a moment of stillness, reflecting the aesthetic values of the period. The work provides insight into the fashion and domestic life of the time, while also demonstrating the artistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school. As a piece of historical printmaking, it represents the intersection of poetry, design, and technical skill characteristic of Gakutei's output during the early nineteenth century.
