A detailed 1859 lithograph by Friedrich Robert Prinz, capturing the lively atmosphere of an Amsterdam fair through illustration and commemorative verse.
This lithograph by Friedrich Robert Prinz serves as a historical document, capturing the atmosphere of the Amsterdam fair (kermis) in 1859. The print functions as a 'kermisprent', a traditional form of broadside or commemorative sheet often sold during public festivities. These items frequently combined satirical or descriptive verse with visual depictions of local life, serving both as souvenirs and social commentary.
The composition is divided into two distinct sections, framed by ornate, rococo-inspired decorative borders. The upper portion depicts a bustling town square, complete with the characteristic gabled architecture of Amsterdam. Figures gather around a central monument, suggesting the lively social interactions typical of a mid-nineteenth-century urban fair. The scene conveys a sense of community and public celebration, rendered with fine, precise lines characteristic of the lithographic technique of the period.
The lower portion features a central block of Dutch text, titled 'Kennisgeving van den Nachtwacht' (Announcement of the Night Watch), dated 12 September 1859. This poem reflects on the joys of the fair, addressing themes of family, modest spending, and the simple pleasures of the event. Flanking the text are illustrations of figures in period attire, including men in top hats and frock coats, which provide a glimpse into the fashion and social hierarchy of the era. The inclusion of the Amsterdam coat of arms at the top of the frame reinforces the civic nature of the print. This work offers a window into the cultural life of the Netherlands during the mid-nineteenth century, documenting the intersection of public spectacle and daily existence in a rapidly changing urban environment.
