Description
A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting farmers and travellers near Kakegawa station. Part of the famous Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō series.
Kakegawa is the twenty-sixth station in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. This series records the journey along the coastal road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition focuses on the daily activities of common people against a wide rural backdrop.
In the foreground, a large stone lantern and the base of a torii gate mark the entrance to a sacred area. These structures belong to the path leading toward Mount Akiba, a site known for its shrine dedicated to protection against fire. A traveller walks past the lantern carrying a heavy load on his back. To the right, several farmers work in flooded rice paddies. They wear traditional straw hats and blue garments while bending over to plant seedlings.
The two large pine trees in the centre provide a vertical anchor for the scene. Their trunks cross at the base, creating a natural frame for the distant view. The needles are rendered in clusters of dark green, contrasting with the lighter tones of the sky. Beyond the rice paddies, the terrain rises into low, rolling hills. These are depicted with soft washes of green and grey, creating a sense of atmospheric perspective.
Hiroshige uses a horizontal format to show the scale of the fields. The middle ground contains a winding path where more travellers move toward the distant hills. The sky transitions from a pale cream to a soft orange at the horizon, suggesting the light of early morning or late afternoon. This print demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing architectural elements with natural scenery. The use of bokashi (colour gradation) in the sky and water adds depth to the flat woodblock medium.
The Hoeido edition of this series established Hiroshige as a leading artist in Japan. His work often captured the weather and atmosphere of specific locations. This print is a clear example of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
