A fine etching by the Italian Mannerist master Parmigianino, depicting the biblical heroine Judith in a fluid, stylised composition.
This etching depicts the biblical heroine Judith, who is shown in a moment of triumph after the assassination of the Assyrian general Holofernes. Parmigianino, a central figure of the Italian Mannerist movement, employs his characteristic elongated proportions and fluid, rhythmic line work to convey the drama of the scene. Judith stands in a contrapposto stance, her body twisting with a grace that defies naturalistic constraints. She holds a sword aloft in her right hand, while her left hand grips the severed head of Holofernes. Beside her, an attendant figure assists in the grim task, their forms partially obscured by the heavy drapery of a tent.
The composition is defined by the artist's use of fine, hatched lines to create volume and shadow. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the figures and their expressive gestures. Mannerist art often prioritised stylistic artifice over the balanced harmony of the High Renaissance, and this work displays that shift through the exaggerated length of Judith's limbs and the sophisticated, almost dance-like quality of her movement. The etching technique allows for a delicate rendering of fabric folds and facial features, capturing a sense of urgency and quiet resolve.
Parmigianino was one of the first Italian artists to experiment extensively with etching, a medium that allowed him to translate the spontaneity of his drawings directly onto metal plates. This print reflects his interest in the expressive potential of the line, where the mark-making itself contributes to the emotional weight of the narrative. The work remains a clear example of the technical and aesthetic concerns that occupied artists in the early sixteenth century, moving away from classical restraint toward a more subjective and stylised mode of representation.
