A detailed 1765 etching by Alexander Bannerman, depicting the biblical scene of Joseph interpreting the dreams of the butler and baker.
This print by Alexander Bannerman, dated 1765, reproduces a composition originally painted by the Spanish Baroque master Jusepe de Ribera. The scene depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis, where Joseph interprets the dreams of the Pharaoh's imprisoned butler and baker. Bannerman, a British engraver, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of Ribera's dramatic chiaroscuro into the medium of etching and engraving.
The composition is anchored by the central figure of Joseph, who gestures with his right hand while explaining the visions. To his right, the butler sits upright, his expression one of focused attention. To the left, the baker reclines in a state of dejection, his posture suggesting the unfortunate fate foretold by the interpretation. The figures are rendered with muscular definition and anatomical accuracy, characteristic of the influence of Caravaggism on Ribera's work. The dark, cavernous setting of the prison is conveyed through dense cross-hatching and varied line weights, which create a sense of depth and atmospheric gloom.
Bannerman's work was produced during a period when British printmakers frequently sought to disseminate the compositions of continental Old Masters to a wider audience. The inclusion of the royal coat of arms at the bottom centre indicates the prestige associated with such reproductive print projects in the eighteenth century. The print captures the psychological tension of the moment, focusing on the interaction between the three men. The contrast between the light falling on the figures and the surrounding shadows directs the viewer's eye to the narrative exchange. This piece offers a clear example of the reproductive print tradition, where the engraver's skill is measured by their ability to replicate the tonal range and emotional weight of the original painting.
