A delicate watercolour and ink illustration from Gesina ter Borch's personal album, depicting a young woman suffering from lovesickness, attended by her family and Cupid.
This work by Gesina ter Borch originates from her personal album, a collection of drawings, poems, and songs that offer a window into the domestic life and cultural interests of a seventeenth-century Dutch woman. The page features a narrative scene rendered in watercolour, accompanied by handwritten verses in Dutch. The illustration depicts a young woman lying in a four-poster bed, attended by figures who appear to be her parents and a physician. The presence of Cupid, standing at the foot of the bed with his bow, provides a clear allegorical explanation for the woman's condition: she suffers from lovesickness.
Ter Borch employs a delicate hand, using fine ink lines to define the figures and the architectural structure of the bed. The colour palette is restrained, focusing on the blue of the bed curtains and the red of the coverlet, which draws the eye to the central subject. The surrounding text, written in a fluid, cursive script, frames the visual narrative, blending literary and visual arts into a single page. This combination of poetry and illustration was a common practice among the educated elite of the period, allowing for the expression of personal sentiment and social commentary.
As a member of a prominent artistic family, Gesina ter Borch possessed a high level of technical skill. Her work often captures the quiet, private moments of daily life, moving away from the grand historical subjects favoured by her male contemporaries. This particular page is a fine example of how she integrated her literary compositions with her artistic practice. The scene is not merely a depiction of illness, but a playful exploration of the romantic tropes prevalent in the literature of the Dutch Golden Age. The inclusion of Cupid transforms a standard medical consultation into a lighthearted observation on the nature of affection and parental concern.
