A portrait of Agostina Segatori, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, featuring his characteristic rhythmic brushwork and bold use of colour.
Painted during his time in Paris, this portrait depicts Agostina Segatori, the proprietor of the Café du Tambourin. Van Gogh frequented this establishment, which served as a venue for his own exhibitions and a meeting place for fellow artists. The work reflects his engagement with the Parisian avant-garde, particularly his interest in the aesthetic qualities of Japanese woodblock prints and the use of flat, decorative colour fields.
Van Gogh employs a distinct technique here, using short, rhythmic brushstrokes that create a textured surface across the canvas. The background is a uniform, golden yellow, which pushes the figure forward and flattens the pictorial space. The subject wears a traditional Italian costume, rendered with a palette of muted reds, greens, and whites. Her posture is frontal and composed, with her hands resting calmly in her lap, holding a small cluster of daisies. The chair back on the left and the striped border on the right provide structural elements that frame the sitter, while the overall application of paint demonstrates his move away from the darker tones of his earlier Dutch period toward the brighter, more experimental style that would define his later work in the south of France.
This portrait is a study in colour contrast and pattern. The interplay between the solid yellow backdrop and the complex, woven appearance of the sitter's skirt shows his focus on surface design. By isolating the figure against a simplified environment, Van Gogh directs the viewer to the psychological presence of the subject, capturing a moment of quietude within the busy artistic circles of late 19th-century Paris.
