An early watercolour by Vincent van Gogh depicting the industrial outskirts of The Hague, featuring a canal, a barge, and factory chimneys.
Produced during his formative period in The Hague, this work captures the industrial outskirts of the city. Vincent van Gogh utilised a combination of graphite and watercolour to document the encroaching urbanisation of the Dutch countryside. The composition is anchored by a large, flat-bottomed barge resting in a canal, which leads the eye toward the factory buildings in the background. Smoke rises from the chimneys, suggesting the constant activity of the iron mill, while a lone figure and a horse-drawn cart provide a sense of scale to the scene.
Van Gogh was particularly interested in the social and physical realities of the working class during this time. His palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, muted greens, and greys to convey the atmosphere of a damp, industrial day. The application of paint is controlled, reflecting his early efforts to master perspective and structural drawing before he adopted the more expressive brushwork associated with his later years in France. The sky is rendered with thin washes, creating a sense of overcast weather that permeates the entire scene. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's early observational style, where he focused on the mundane details of daily life rather than the dramatic subjects he would later pursue. It remains a clear example of his technical development as he transitioned from drawing to painting, demonstrating his ability to balance architectural elements with the natural environment of the canal side.
