Beschrijving
A 1991 Pop Art interior scene by Roy Lichtenstein, featuring his signature Ben-Day dots, bold outlines, and a primary colour palette.
Interior with Restful Paintings is a characteristic work from Roy Lichtenstein's late career, produced in 1991. This piece belongs to his series of domestic interiors, which he began in the early 1990s. The composition draws inspiration from advertisements found in furniture catalogues and home design magazines. Lichtenstein employs his signature Ben-Day dots, bold black outlines, and a primary colour palette to deconstruct the concept of the modern living space.
The scene depicts a stylised room containing a sofa, side tables, and two framed artworks on the wall. By including paintings within his own painting, Lichtenstein engages in a meta-commentary on the nature of art and its consumption. The objects are rendered with a flatness that denies traditional perspective, forcing the viewer to engage with the image as a graphic construction rather than a realistic representation. The use of diagonal stripes and solid blocks of yellow, blue, and red creates a sense of order and artificiality.
Lichtenstein's approach removes the emotional weight typically associated with domestic settings. Instead, he presents the room as a collection of signs and symbols. The title itself, Interior with Restful Paintings, adds a layer of irony, as the visual experience is anything but quiet. The high-contrast patterns and saturated colours create a sense of visual activity. This work demonstrates his ability to transform mundane commercial imagery into a formal exploration of line, colour, and space. It remains a clear example of his method of using mechanical reproduction techniques to challenge the boundaries between high art and popular culture.

Interior with Restful Paintings - Roy Lichtenstein
Artist Biography
Roy Lichtenstein
He was not young when this happened. He was thirty-eight, teaching art at Rutgers University, and had spent the previous decade painting Abstract Expressionist canvases that looked like everyone else's. The comic paintings were a deliberate rejection of the idea that art had to show the artist's inner emotional state. They showed Donald Duck instead.
Leo Castelli gave him his first show in 1962. Every painting sold before the exhibition opened. The speed was unusual. Warhol was doing similar things with soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles, but Lichtenstein's method was different: he hand-painted everything to look mechanically reproduced. The Ben-Day dots were applied through a stencil. The lines were drawn with a projector and then painted by hand. The process was laborious and precise, which was the joke: meticulous craftsmanship in the service of something that was supposed to look cheap.
He moved beyond comics into landscapes, brushstrokes (paintings of brushstrokes), Chinese landscapes, interiors, and nudes, all in the same flat, graphic style. The Brushstroke series, where he painted enormous images of painterly brushstrokes in the same deadpan comic-book technique, annoyed Abstract Expressionists specifically and delighted everyone else.
