A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the intense, dramatic expressions of two kabuki actors in a classic ukiyo-e style.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts two kabuki actors, Ichikawa Omezō and Ōtani Oniji III, in their respective roles as Tomita Hyōtarō and Ukiyo Tohei. Produced in 1794, the work is a characteristic example of Sharaku's brief but intense career in the ukiyo-e genre. Unlike many of his contemporaries who idealised their subjects, Sharaku is known for his unflinching, almost grotesque realism. He captures the exaggerated expressions and physical tension of the actors, providing a glimpse into the dramatic atmosphere of the Edo-period theatre.
The composition is stark and direct. Ichikawa Omezō stands tall, wearing a red-checked kimono, while Ōtani Oniji III is positioned lower, his posture suggesting a moment of sudden movement or confrontation. The use of a mica background, a technique known as 'kira-e', adds a subtle, shimmering texture that contrasts with the bold, dark lines of the figures. The print focuses on the psychological intensity of the performance, stripping away unnecessary background detail to keep the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two characters.
Sharaku's work remains a subject of study due to his mysterious origins and the short duration of his artistic output, which lasted less than a year. His ability to convey the specific mannerisms of individual actors, rather than generic types, separates his prints from the broader output of the period. This piece is a fine example of the 'okubi-e' or large-head portrait style, adapted here to show two figures in a dynamic, interlocking arrangement. The print reflects the high energy of the kabuki stage, where gesture and costume were essential components of storytelling. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and the striking red of the checked garment, ensures the focus remains on the expressive faces and the precise, calligraphic lines that define the figures.
