A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro, depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II in a stylised samurai role.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II in the role of a young samurai. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyohiro worked within a lineage that maintained a close association with the kabuki theatre, producing promotional prints that functioned as both advertisements and souvenirs for theatre-goers in Edo-period Japan. The artist employs the characteristic style of the school, featuring bold, calligraphic outlines and a flattened perspective that prioritises the graphic quality of the actor's costume and posture over anatomical realism.
The actor is shown in a three-quarter profile, wearing a kimono decorated with a repeating pine needle motif, layered beneath a plaid haori. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of a fan motif at the top right, which contains a depiction of Mount Fuji, and accompanying calligraphic text that identifies the subject and the theatrical context. The colour palette is restricted to muted tones, typical of the benizuri-e technique, which utilised a limited range of pigments, often including a soft pink or red alongside green and black ink. The print captures the stylised, dramatic essence of the kabuki stage, where the actor's pose and costume were essential tools for communicating character type to the audience. The work reflects the conventions of mid-eighteenth-century printmaking, where the focus remained on the theatrical persona rather than the individual identity of the performer. The clean lines and decorative arrangement of the garments demonstrate the technical precision required for multi-block printing during this period.
