A characteristic work by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, depicting the architecture of St Ives through a flattened, memory-based perspective.
Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties after the death of his wife. He lacked formal training, yet his work gained recognition from members of the St Ives art colony, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. This piece, Houses at St Ives, Cornwall, demonstrates his characteristic approach to spatial representation. Wallis often ignored traditional perspective, choosing instead to arrange buildings and structures based on his memory of the town rather than a fixed viewpoint.
The composition is defined by a flattened, map-like quality. The houses appear as distinct, simplified blocks, scattered across the surface of the cardboard. Wallis frequently utilised scavenged materials, such as discarded packaging or cardboard boxes, which influenced the scale and texture of his output. His palette is limited, relying on muted blues, greys, and whites to capture the atmosphere of the Cornish coast. The outlines are drawn with a direct, unrefined hand, often using pencil or thin paint to define the edges of the architecture.
Wallis did not seek to replicate the appearance of the town with photographic accuracy. His work functions as a personal record of his surroundings, prioritising the essential forms of the buildings over realistic detail. The lack of depth creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is looking down upon the town from an elevated position. This approach to image-making aligns with the interests of early twentieth-century modernists who sought to move away from academic realism. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Wallis produced images that possess a raw, honest quality, reflecting his life-long connection to the sea and the coastal environment of Cornwall.
