A refined eighteenth-century engraving depicting the mythological scene of Hercules and Queen Omphale, capturing the reversal of heroic roles.
This engraving depicts the classical myth of Hercules and Omphale, a narrative exploring the reversal of gender roles and the subversion of heroic strength. According to the legend, Hercules is enslaved to Queen Omphale of Lydia for a period of three years as penance for his actions. During this time, the hero is often shown performing domestic tasks, such as spinning wool, while the queen assumes his attributes, including his lion skin and club.
In this composition, Cazes presents the pair in a domestic setting. Hercules appears seated, his muscular form contrasted with the delicate task he performs. Omphale stands beside him, holding the hero's club, a visual signifier of her temporary authority. Two putti accompany the figures, adding a playful, lighthearted quality typical of the Rococo period. The engraving technique captures the textures of the drapery and the soft modelling of the figures, creating a sense of depth within the interior space.
The print includes a poetic inscription in French at the base, which comments on the irony of the situation. It notes that the hero who once rid the world of monsters is now reduced to spinning wool under the command of a woman. This work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in classical themes, often interpreted through a lens of wit and artifice rather than strict moralising. The balanced composition and the focus on the interaction between the two central figures demonstrate the stylistic preferences of the French school during the early eighteenth century. The print serves as a fine example of how classical mythology was adapted to suit the decorative and intellectual tastes of the era, prioritising elegance and narrative clarity over the dramatic tension found in earlier Baroque interpretations of the same subject.
