A sombre portrait of a peasant woman, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1885 during his Dutch period.
Painted in 1885 during his time in Nuenen, this portrait belongs to a series of studies Vincent van Gogh produced of local peasants. These works reflect his interest in the lives of rural labourers, a subject he approached with directness and a sombre palette. The artist focused on the physical features of his sitter, using heavy brushwork to define the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing.
The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the subject against a dark, indistinct background. The light source is subtle, catching the bridge of the nose and the lips, which gives the face a sculptural quality. Van Gogh employed a restricted range of earth tones, punctuated by the muted green of the shawl, which provides a quiet contrast to the dark shadows surrounding the figure. This approach to portraiture shows his early interest in capturing the character of his subjects through thick paint application and honest observation, rather than idealised representation.
This work is part of a larger body of studies that preceded his more famous later works. It demonstrates his early technical development, particularly his ability to convey mood through colour and brushstroke. The painting is a study of human form and light, stripped of unnecessary detail. It remains a clear example of his focus on the working class during his Dutch period, where he sought to depict the reality of rural life. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
