A detailed reproduction of a 12th-century Pala school manuscript folio, depicting Green Tara in a vibrant, narrative scene.
This exquisite folio originates from a dispersed Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita manuscript, a text central to Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. Produced during the Pala period in Eastern India, the work reflects the sophisticated artistic traditions of the region. The central figure, Green Tara, is depicted in a dynamic posture, surrounded by a gathering of devotees and attendants. Her form is rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that define her posture and the delicate folds of her garments. The artist employs a palette dominated by warm ochres, deep reds, and dark greens, creating a visual balance between the central deity and the surrounding figures.
The composition is structured within a decorative border, typical of palm-leaf manuscript illumination. The figures are arranged to suggest depth, despite the overall flat application of colour. The background features stylised foliage, providing a setting for the divine interaction. The attention to detail in the jewellery, facial features, and the patterned textiles demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Mahavihara workshops. Each figure is distinct, with varied expressions and gestures that contribute to the narrative quality of the scene. The work remains a significant example of medieval Indian religious art, capturing the aesthetic and spiritual values of the era. The preservation of such delicate media allows for a clear view of the technical precision required to execute these miniature paintings on organic substrates. This print captures the original colour saturation and the fine brushwork of the manuscript page, offering an opportunity to observe the stylistic conventions of the Pala school in detail.
