A detailed 18th-century etching depicting the bustling harbour of Arakan, featuring traditional vessels and coastal scenery.
This etching, titled 'Gezicht op haven van Arakan', provides a detailed topographical view of the harbour at Arakan, a region historically significant for its maritime trade. Attributed to Thomas Doesburgh and published by the firm Covens et Mortier, the work reflects the European fascination with distant lands during the early 18th century. The composition is framed by a decorative cartouche at the top, which identifies the location, while the main scene captures the busy activity of the port.
The print depicts a variety of vessels, ranging from large European-style sailing ships anchored in the bay to smaller local boats navigating the foreground. The shoreline is populated with traditional structures and palm trees, offering a glimpse into the coastal environment of the period. An elephant is visible on the left bank, a detail often included in such prints to signify the exotic nature of the region to a European audience. The artist employs fine lines to render the textures of the water, the foliage, and the architectural forms, creating a sense of depth across the harbour.
Such prints were frequently produced for inclusion in travelogues or atlases, serving as visual records for those who would never visit these territories. The work is characteristic of Dutch cartographic and illustrative traditions, where precision and narrative detail were prioritised. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, 'Covens et Mortier exc.', confirms its circulation through one of the most prominent map-publishing houses in Amsterdam during the 18th century. This piece offers a window into the historical perception of Southeast Asian ports, documenting the intersection of local life and international maritime commerce through the lens of contemporary European printmaking techniques.
