A 1912 Cubist oil painting by Albert Gleizes, featuring fragmented figures and geometric forms in a domestic setting.
Albert Gleizes, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced Femmes cousant in 1912. This work captures the transition from the analytical phase of the movement toward a more structured, rhythmic approach. The composition fragments the domestic scene of women sewing into a series of overlapping geometric planes. By breaking down the figures and their environment into angular facets, Gleizes rejects traditional perspective in favour of a simultaneous view of multiple angles.
The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones, ochres, and muted greys to maintain focus on the structural arrangement of the forms. The figures are integrated into the surrounding architecture, creating a unified surface where the distinction between the subjects and the background is intentionally blurred. This technique allows the viewer to perceive the rhythm of the sewing action through the repetition of lines and shapes rather than through realistic depiction.
Gleizes was a vocal theorist of the movement, co-authoring 'Du Cubisme' with Jean Metzinger in the same year this piece was created. His approach here demonstrates a clear interest in the mathematical organisation of the canvas. The work avoids the decorative, instead prioritising the intellectual rigour of the Cubist method. The interplay of light and shadow is achieved through the juxtaposition of these geometric segments, which guide the eye across the surface. This print offers a clear look at the early twentieth-century shift in European art, where the objective was to represent the essence of a subject through its formal components. The work remains a representative example of the Parisian avant-garde during a period of rapid stylistic change.
