A detailed seventeenth-century etching from John Ogilby's edition of Aesop's Fables, depicting the confrontation between birds and beasts.
This etching originates from John Ogilby's 1665 edition of Aesop's Fables. It depicts the narrative of the birds and the beasts, a classic tale concerning a conflict between the two groups. The composition is split into two distinct factions: the terrestrial animals on the left and the avian creatures on the right. A large eagle, representing the avian leader, dominates the upper centre, while a rooster stands as a prominent figure among the birds below. The terrestrial side includes a variety of mammals, such as a leopard, a horse, and a wolf, all rendered with the characteristic precision of seventeenth-century printmaking.
The artist employs fine, hatched lines to create texture and form, providing a sense of volume to the animals despite the relatively flat spatial arrangement. The background is minimal, featuring a faint outline of a castle or fortification, which serves to ground the scene without distracting from the primary subjects. The work reflects the period's interest in moralising literature and the use of animal allegories to comment on human social and political structures. The etching demonstrates the technical skill required for book illustration during the Restoration era, where clarity of narrative was as important as aesthetic execution. The print is marked with the number 29 in the lower right corner, indicating its place within the larger collection of plates commissioned for the publication. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the seventeenth century, where classical literature was brought to life through detailed, monochrome engravings that were accessible to a wide audience of readers.
