A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers at Ejiri, a stop on the historic Tokaido road in Japan.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Ejiri, one of the stops along the Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on the daily life of travellers during the Edo period. A man carries a palanquin on his shoulders, while another figure sits atop a horse, navigating the path near a bridge. The scene is rendered with the characteristic clarity of Hokusai's early nineteenth-century work, prioritising narrative detail and the depiction of human activity over atmospheric effects.
Hokusai's approach to the Tokaido series differs from the later, more famous interpretations by Utagawa Hiroshige. While Hiroshige often emphasised weather and seasonal changes, Hokusai concentrated on the figures and their immediate surroundings. The print uses a limited palette, typical of the period, with soft washes of colour applied to the paper. The lines are precise, defining the forms of the figures, the horse, and the architectural elements of the bridge. The inclusion of a large tree and straw bundles provides a sense of place, grounding the travellers in the rural environment of the Tokaido route.
As a piece of Ukiyo-e, this work offers a glimpse into the social history of Japan. The Tokaido was a busy thoroughfare, and prints such as this served as both souvenirs for travellers and artistic records of the journey. The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to capture movement and posture, from the strained stance of the palanquin bearer to the relaxed posture of the rider. The composition is balanced, with the bridge providing a diagonal element that guides the eye across the frame. This print remains a clear example of the genre, documenting the mundane yet essential aspects of travel in historical Japan.
