A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Cornelis Galle (I) depicting a double herm of the Roman deities Mars and Minerva.
This engraving by Cornelis Galle (I) depicts a double herm, a classical sculptural form featuring two heads joined back to back on a single pillar. The composition presents the Roman deities Mars and Minerva, identifiable by their respective attributes. On the left, the figure of Mars wears a winged helmet, while on the right, Minerva is shown with a crested helmet and a breastplate adorned with the aegis, featuring the head of Medusa.
Galle, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The work reflects the period interest in classical iconography and the revival of antique forms within European art. The shading is achieved through a system of parallel lines and cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and weight in the stone-like forms of the busts. The background is rendered with horizontal lines, providing a neutral field that allows the sculptural figures to occupy the visual centre of the print.
The herm format was common in Roman gardens and public spaces, often used to mark boundaries or honour deities. By isolating these figures in a print, Galle provides a study of classical physiognomy and costume. The attention to detail in the metallic surfaces of the helmets and the drapery of the figures shows the influence of the Flemish tradition of printmaking, which prioritised clarity and anatomical accuracy. This print functions as a record of classical sculpture, capturing the stoic expressions and idealised features associated with these mythological figures. It is a clear example of the reproductive print culture that circulated classical motifs among artists and collectors during the seventeenth century.
