A refined ink and colour painting on silk by Taki Katei, depicting a deer standing near a mountain stream amidst autumn maple leaves.
Taki Katei was a prominent figure in the Meiji-period art world, known for his mastery of the Nanga style, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting traditions. This work, Deer by Mountain Stream, demonstrates his technical precision and his ability to balance natural observation with stylistic convention. The composition follows the vertical format of a hanging scroll, allowing the viewer to follow the movement from the upper branches down to the stream below.
The deer, rendered with soft, layered ink washes, stands alert on a rocky embankment. Katei uses subtle variations in tone to suggest the texture of the animal's coat and the dappled light filtering through the scene. The maple leaves, painted in a distinct, muted red, provide a seasonal marker, suggesting the transition into autumn. These leaves appear to drift through the air, creating a sense of quiet motion that contrasts with the stillness of the deer.
Below the animal, a stream cuts through the rocks, depicted with fluid, calligraphic brushwork. The artist employs a restrained palette, typical of his approach to kacho-ga (bird-and-flower painting), where the focus remains on the harmony between the subject and its environment. The inclusion of the artist's signature and seal in the lower left corner confirms the work's provenance within his mature period. This piece reflects the technical rigour expected of an artist who served as a painter to the Imperial Household Agency. The work invites close inspection of the brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the grasses and the rocky terrain, which show the influence of traditional ink-wash techniques adapted for a more naturalistic representation of the Japanese wilderness.
