A formal 1724 Dutch engraving featuring the coat of arms and a dedication to Hendrik Zwaerdekroon, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
This engraving, produced by the Dutch publishing house of Joannes van Braam and Gerard onder de Linden in 1724, functions as a formal dedication page. It honours Hendrik Zwaerdekroon, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The composition follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century book illustration, where heraldic elements and allegorical figures frame a central text block.
At the centre, a large, draped cloth bears the inscription addressed to Zwaerdekroon. Above this, the family coat of arms is displayed, surmounted by a helmet and elaborate mantling. The structure is supported by four allegorical female figures, each representing virtues or attributes associated with the subject. Two figures sit atop the architectural frame, while two others stand at the sides, holding the edges of the central banner. At the base, two putti interact with a sword and a laurel wreath, symbols of military authority and victory.
The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of Dutch engraving during this period. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume in the drapery and the architectural elements. The symmetry of the design reflects the formalised aesthetic of the Baroque era, intended to convey status and institutional authority. As a piece of historical ephemera, it provides insight into the visual language used by colonial administrators to project power and legitimacy through printed media. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a significant example of eighteenth-century Dutch graphic design.
