A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting the legendary figure Dashun, assisted by elephants and birds while working in the fields.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the legendary Chinese figure Dashun, one of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. The narrative centres on the myth of Dashun ploughing a field at Mount Li, where his devotion was so great that birds assisted him in weeding and elephants helped him till the soil. Kuniyoshi captures this scene with a distinct sense of wonder, placing the massive, gentle elephants alongside the small, industrious figure of Dashun.
The composition balances the scale of the animals against the human subject, using a soft, muted palette that reflects the mid-nineteenth-century aesthetic of the Edo period. Kuniyoshi, known for his imaginative approach to historical and legendary subjects, employs clean lines to define the forms of the elephants and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of numerous small birds creates a sense of movement across the frame, guiding the eye from the foreground to the distant hills.
As part of the series 'Nijushiko doji kagami' (Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety as a Mirror for Children), the work served an educational purpose, presenting moral lessons through visual storytelling. The print demonstrates Kuniyoshi's ability to blend traditional Confucian ethics with the expressive, often playful, style that defined his later career. The cartouche in the upper left corner provides the textual context for the scene, maintaining the integration of word and image common in Japanese printmaking. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural values of the era, presented through the lens of one of the most inventive artists of the Utagawa school.
