Beschrijving
A classic Pop Art screenprint by Roy Lichtenstein, depicting the iconic marbleised cover of a school notebook.
Roy Lichtenstein produced this work as part of a series examining the aesthetic of mass-produced stationery. The image replicates the cover of a standard school notebook, complete with the word 'Compositions' in a formal typeface and the price '59c' printed in the corner. By elevating a mundane, utilitarian object to the status of fine art, Lichtenstein engages with the core tenets of the Pop Art movement. He focuses on the visual language of commercial printing, specifically the high-contrast, black-and-white marble pattern that was a common feature of student supplies in mid-century America.
The composition relies on the tension between the mechanical reproduction of the pattern and the deliberate framing of the central label. Lichtenstein employs a flat, graphic approach that removes the artist's hand, mimicking the cold precision of industrial manufacturing. The stark contrast between the dark, organic shapes of the marbleised background and the clean, geometric lines of the central box creates a visual rhythm. This piece functions as a commentary on the ubiquity of consumer goods and the way everyday objects shape our visual environment. It is a precise observation of the intersection between academic life and commercial design, presented without the sentimentality often found in traditional still-life painting. The work remains a clear example of the artist's interest in the iconography of the American everyday, stripped of its original context and re-presented as a formal study in graphic repetition and typography.

Compositions II - Roy Lichtenstein
Artist Biography
Roy Lichtenstein
He was not young when this happened. He was thirty-eight, teaching art at Rutgers University, and had spent the previous decade painting Abstract Expressionist canvases that looked like everyone else's. The comic paintings were a deliberate rejection of the idea that art had to show the artist's inner emotional state. They showed Donald Duck instead.
Leo Castelli gave him his first show in 1962. Every painting sold before the exhibition opened. The speed was unusual. Warhol was doing similar things with soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles, but Lichtenstein's method was different: he hand-painted everything to look mechanically reproduced. The Ben-Day dots were applied through a stencil. The lines were drawn with a projector and then painted by hand. The process was laborious and precise, which was the joke: meticulous craftsmanship in the service of something that was supposed to look cheap.
He moved beyond comics into landscapes, brushstrokes (paintings of brushstrokes), Chinese landscapes, interiors, and nudes, all in the same flat, graphic style. The Brushstroke series, where he painted enormous images of painterly brushstrokes in the same deadpan comic-book technique, annoyed Abstract Expressionists specifically and delighted everyone else.
