Description
A striking abstract work from Alberto Burri's Combustione series, featuring charred paper elements and bold red pigment.
Alberto Burri, a physician by training, turned to art after his experiences as a prisoner of war during the Second World War. His work often involves the physical manipulation of materials, moving away from traditional painting techniques to explore the properties of matter itself. The Combustione series is defined by the use of fire as a creative tool. By burning surfaces, Burri introduces an element of destruction that simultaneously functions as a constructive act.
In this piece, the paper surface shows signs of thermal alteration. The charred edges and scattered black fragments create a contrast against the muted, neutral background. A central area of red pigment provides a visual anchor, drawing the eye toward the site of the combustion. The composition is balanced by the placement of torn paper elements, which retain faint traces of markings or text, suggesting a history prior to the burning process. Burri avoids representational imagery, preferring to allow the physical state of the materials to dictate the visual outcome.
This approach aligns with the broader Art Informel movement, which sought to reject geometric abstraction in favour of a more spontaneous, material-focused aesthetic. The work does not attempt to depict an external reality. Instead, it presents the viewer with the immediate, tactile evidence of a chemical and physical reaction. The resulting image is one of controlled chaos, where the artist acts as an orchestrator of decay. By incorporating elements of chance and physical force, Burri challenges the conventional boundaries between the object and the artwork. The print captures the texture and depth of the original, preserving the raw quality of the scorched paper and the stark interplay between the burnt fragments and the underlying surface.
