A 1967 screenprint by British modernist Terry Frost, featuring a rhythmic column of semi-circular shapes against a neutral beige background.
Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School of British Modernism, produced this screenprint in 1967. The work demonstrates his interest in the interaction of geometric form and colour. A large, neutral field of beige occupies the majority of the composition, providing a quiet space that contrasts with the vertical column of semi-circular shapes aligned along the left edge.
These shapes, rendered in distinct hues of brown, turquoise, green, red, and orange, function as a rhythmic sequence. Frost often drew inspiration from the Cornish coast, where the light and the physical environment informed his approach to abstraction. In this print, he reduces visual information to its most basic components. The arrangement of the shapes creates a sense of balance, despite the asymmetry of the composition. The flat application of colour and the clean edges are characteristic of his printmaking practice during the 1960s, a period when he explored the potential of screenprinting to achieve precise, graphic results.
Frost's work is defined by a rigorous economy of means. He avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to allow the relationship between the shapes and the background to dictate the viewer's experience. The beige ground acts as a foil to the saturated colours, preventing them from overwhelming the visual field. This print is an example of his ability to create order through simple, repeated motifs. It reflects his broader interest in the structural qualities of painting and printmaking, where the placement of a single element is calculated to affect the equilibrium of the entire image. The work remains a clear representation of his mid-career style, where he moved away from more gestural marks toward a controlled, hard-edged aesthetic that defined much of his later output.
