Beschrijving
A portrait of Colonel Israel Thorndike by Gilbert Stuart, the painting captures the sitter's intelligence and authority through Stuart's naturalistic style and attention to detail.
This portrait by Gilbert Stuart depicts Colonel Israel Thorndike (1755-1832), a prominent American merchant, politician, and philanthropist. Stuart was one of the foremost portrait painters in American history, known for his ability to capture the likeness and character of his sitters. His style is characterised by a direct, naturalistic approach, with attention to detail in the face and a more simplified treatment of the clothing and background. In this painting, Thorndike is shown seated, holding papers in his left hand. He wears a black coat and a white ruffled shirt, typical of the period's fashion. The background is a muted brown, which helps to bring the focus to Thorndike's face. Stuart's brushwork is evident in the subtle gradations of tone and the way he models the light on Thorndike's features. The portrait conveys a sense of the sitter's intelligence and authority.
