A detailed depiction of a scene from Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, capturing the moral tension between Claudio and his sister, Isabella.
Claudio and Isabella, painted between 1850 and 1853, is a primary example of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's commitment to literary subjects and meticulous observation. The scene depicts a moment from William Shakespeare's play, Measure for Measure. Claudio, imprisoned for his sexual indiscretions, is visited by his sister, Isabella, a novice nun. Hunt captures the tension of their encounter, as Isabella recoils from her brother's plea that she sacrifice her virtue to save his life.
The composition is defined by its claustrophobic setting. The figures are confined within a prison cell, with the barred window providing the only source of natural light. Hunt employs a high degree of finish, evident in the textures of the wooden walls, the metallic sheen of the shackles, and the folds of Isabella's habit. The artist's attention to detail extends to the symbolic elements, such as the lute hanging in the background and the scattered blossoms on the floor, which suggest the fleeting nature of life and the loss of innocence.
This work demonstrates the Pre-Raphaelite rejection of the dark, murky tones favoured by the Royal Academy at the time. Instead, Hunt uses a bright, clear palette to render the figures and their surroundings with sharp focus. The emotional weight of the narrative is conveyed through the body language of the subjects: Claudio's desperate posture contrasts with Isabella's rigid, upright stance. By choosing a moment of moral crisis, Hunt invites the viewer to consider the ethical dilemmas faced by the characters. The painting remains a significant example of Victorian narrative art, reflecting the period's fascination with Shakespearean themes and moral instruction through visual storytelling.
