A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting a figure in a patterned kimono, reflecting the literary culture of Edo-period poetry circles.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei belongs to the surimono genre, a form of private, commissioned art often exchanged among poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Surimono prints are known for their high production quality, frequently employing techniques such as embossing, metallic pigments, and complex layering. This specific work, part of the series Three Classical Arts for the Sugawara Circle, depicts a figure engaged with the literary tradition of Chinese poetry.
The composition is highly stylised, prioritising decorative elements over naturalistic space. The central figure is shown from behind, allowing the artist to focus on the elaborate patterns of the kimono. These textiles are rendered with precision, displaying a mix of geometric and floral motifs that demonstrate the technical skill of the carver and printer. To the left, a large, ornate mirror frame stands as a structural element, its surface decorated with cloud motifs. The inclusion of a cartouche containing Japanese calligraphy integrates the visual image with the literary theme of the series.
Gakutei, a student of Hokusai, was a master of this refined format. His work often reflects the intellectual interests of his patrons, who were members of poetry clubs. The colour palette is restrained yet sophisticated, relying on muted earth tones, deep blues, and subtle metallic accents to create a sense of quiet luxury. The print captures a moment of cultural appreciation, where the act of reading or composing poetry is elevated through the medium of the woodblock print. This piece serves as an example of the intersection between visual art and literature in nineteenth-century Japan, where the aesthetic experience was deeply tied to the social and intellectual life of the urban elite.
