Beschrijving
A classic Surrealist work by Rene Magritte, exploring the philosophical tension between an object and its linguistic label.
Rene Magritte, a central figure in the Surrealist movement, produced this work in 1964. It features a single, realistically rendered apple accompanied by the handwritten French phrase, Ceci n'est pas une pomme (This is not an apple). The composition is straightforward, placing the fruit against a neutral background to focus the viewer on the relationship between the object and its linguistic representation.
Magritte often explored the gap between an object and its name. By asserting that the painted image is not the physical fruit itself, he forces an examination of how humans interpret visual information. The apple is depicted with naturalistic shading and texture, yet the text denies its identity as a real object. This contradiction is a hallmark of his approach to art, which prioritises philosophical inquiry over purely aesthetic concerns.
Unlike his more famous pipe painting, this work uses a slightly different phrasing and presentation. The script is elegant, contrasting with the solid, rounded form of the apple. The work functions as a visual paradox, questioning the reliability of perception. Magritte does not aim to deceive the viewer, but rather to reveal the arbitrary nature of signs and symbols. The painting remains a clear example of his interest in the intersection of language and visual art, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation or complex narrative elements. It invites the viewer to consider the nature of representation itself, rather than simply observing a still life.

Artist Biography
Rene Magritte
He grew up in Lessines, Belgium. His mother drowned herself in the River Sambre when he was thirteen; her body was found with her nightdress wrapped around her face. Whether this explains the recurring covered faces in his paintings is a question biographers have insisted on and Magritte consistently refused to answer.
He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and spent several years working as a commercial artist and wallpaper designer. The commercial work is relevant: his painting technique is deliberately flat, illustrative, and impersonal. There are no visible brushstrokes, no evidence of struggle. The surfaces look like advertisements for impossible things. He painted in a small room in his house, wearing a suit, with his easel next to the living room furniture.
He was a Surrealist but not the Parisian variety. He disliked Breton's intellectualising and preferred to work from home in Brussels. His version of Surrealism was cooler and more logical: ordinary objects placed in wrong contexts, familiar things made strange through simple displacement. A rock floating in the sky. An apple covering a face. A train emerging from a fireplace. Each painting poses a single visual problem and leaves you to solve it.
He made relatively few paintings compared to his contemporaries. Each one is self-contained. He did not develop through phases or wrestle with form. He found his approach early and refined it quietly for decades.
