A preparatory cartoon for the Stoclet Frieze, this work features the iconic embrace of a couple surrounded by the rhythmic, golden spirals of the Tree of Life.
This work is a preparatory cartoon for the Stoclet Frieze, commissioned for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Designed by Josef Hoffmann, the villa is a masterwork of the Vienna Secession. Klimt created this series of mosaics to integrate with the architectural geometry of the space. The composition depicts a couple in a tight embrace, their forms obscured by the heavy, decorative patterns of their garments.
Klimt employs a flat, two-dimensional approach that draws upon Byzantine mosaic traditions. The background is filled with the Tree of Life motif, characterised by swirling, golden spirals that create a rhythmic, hypnotic effect. The figures are almost entirely subsumed by the ornamentation, which includes geometric squares, circular motifs, and stylised avian forms. The use of gold paint and muted earth tones reflects the aesthetic of the period, where the distinction between fine art and decorative craft was intentionally blurred.
Unlike his earlier, more naturalistic portraits, this work prioritises symbolic representation over anatomical accuracy. The embrace is static, suggesting a moment of suspended time. The intricate surface treatment serves to unify the figures with the surrounding environment, creating a cohesive visual experience. This cartoon provides a rare look into the planning stages of one of the most ambitious interior design projects of the early twentieth century. It demonstrates the meticulous attention to detail required to translate such complex designs into the final stone and glass mosaic medium. The work remains a primary example of the total work of art, or Gesamtkunstwerk, which defined the output of the Vienna Secessionists during this era.
