Description
A Romantic landscape by David Cox depicting a group of travellers and sheep on a path leading towards the ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle in Wales.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a significant contributor to the English Romantic tradition. While he is often associated with watercolours, he turned his attention to oil painting later in his career. This work depicts the ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The castle sits atop a limestone precipice, appearing as a distant silhouette against a pale sky.
The composition uses a low viewpoint from a rugged track. In the foreground, a small group of figures travels along the path. A man on horseback and a woman on foot lead a flock of sheep through the rocky terrain. To the right, a stream flows over boulders, partially obscured by the dark foliage of overhanging trees. The use of light creates a sense of atmospheric depth, with the foreground in shadow and the distant hills bathed in a soft, hazy glow.
Cox was known for his ability to capture the effects of weather and light on the British countryside. His brushwork here is loose and expressive, avoiding fine detail in favour of capturing the mood of the Welsh wilderness. The dark greens and browns of the woodland contrast with the lighter tones of the sky and the sunlit castle. This painting reflects the 19th-century interest in the sublime and the picturesque qualities of medieval ruins within a wild environment.
