A refined hanging scroll painting of a camellia branch by the celebrated Edo-period artist Ogata Kōrin.
This hanging scroll by Ogata Kōrin displays the characteristic aesthetic of the Rinpa school, which flourished in Kyoto during the Edo period. Kōrin, a central figure in this movement, is known for his ability to combine decorative art with naturalistic observation. In this work, the camellia branch occupies the lower portion of the silk surface, allowing the empty space above to create a sense of balance and quietude.
The artist employs a technique that emphasises the form of the flowers through bold, saturated red pigments, contrasted against the muted, earthy tones of the leaves and the aged silk background. The leaves are rendered with subtle washes, suggesting volume and texture without the need for heavy outlines. The composition is deliberate, focusing on the organic curve of the branch as it rises from the bottom edge, guiding the viewer's eye through the clusters of blossoms.
Rinpa art often draws upon classical Japanese literature and seasonal motifs. The camellia, with its winter bloom, is a traditional subject in Japanese painting, representing resilience and the passage of time. Kōrin's approach here avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a refined simplicity that allows the viewer to appreciate the interplay between the painted subject and the negative space. The signature and seal of the artist are visible in the lower right, confirming the work as an authentic example of his mature style. This print captures the original silk texture and the delicate colour transitions of the painting, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the subtle tonal variations present in the original composition.
