A refined still life by Georges Braque, featuring a pitcher and fish rendered with simplified forms and a muted, graphic palette.
Georges Braque, a central figure in the development of twentieth-century modernism, produced this still life in 1942. The composition reflects his mature approach to the genre, where objects are reduced to their essential forms and arranged with a deliberate, rhythmic balance. Unlike the fragmented, multi-perspective works of his earlier Analytical Cubist period, this piece employs a more flattened, graphic sensibility. The objects—a pitcher, a plate containing two fish, and a single fruit—are rendered with simplified outlines and a restricted palette.
Braque often returned to the theme of the table-top still life throughout his career. Here, the dark surface of the table provides a stark contrast to the lighter tones of the ceramic ware and the fish. The background features a schematic representation of a window, a recurring motif in his studio interiors that serves to anchor the objects within a defined, albeit compressed, space. The brushwork is controlled, prioritising clarity of form over textural variation.
This work demonstrates Braque's ability to imbue everyday items with a sense of quiet gravity. By stripping away extraneous detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the relationship between the objects and the negative space surrounding them. The fish, depicted with a stylised skeletal pattern, act as a graphic element that balances the verticality of the pitcher. This print captures the precise tonal shifts and the deliberate, almost architectural, arrangement of the original oil painting. It is a representative example of Braque's later work, where he sought a synthesis of observation and abstraction, maintaining a focus on the tactile qualities of the objects depicted while adhering to a rigorous, self-imposed formal order.
