A characteristic work by Alfred Wallis, depicting the Royal Albert Bridge and local vessels in his signature naïve, non-perspectival style.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties. He worked primarily on salvaged cardboard, often cutting the material into irregular shapes to suit his composition. This piece depicts the Royal Albert Bridge, a railway structure spanning the River Tamar between Devon and Cornwall. Wallis ignores traditional perspective, choosing instead to arrange the elements of the scene based on his memory and his experience of the maritime environment.
The bridge dominates the upper portion of the work, rendered with a simplified, structural clarity. Below, several boats are scattered across the water. Wallis uses a limited palette, relying on muted greys, blacks, and ochre to define the forms. The water is suggested through rhythmic, directional brushwork, while the boats are depicted from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. This approach is characteristic of his work, where the relative size of objects is determined by their importance to the narrative rather than their distance from the viewer.
Wallis had no formal training, and his work was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928. His direct, unpretentious style appealed to the St Ives group of artists, who valued his lack of academic constraint. The work captures the industrial reality of the Cornish coast, focusing on the functional relationship between the vessels and the engineering of the bridge. By painting on irregular scraps of cardboard, Wallis integrated the physical limitations of his materials into the final image. This print reproduces the texture of the original surface, allowing the viewer to appreciate the raw, immediate quality of his technique. It is a direct observation of a specific location, filtered through the unique visual language of a self-taught artist.
