A dynamic abstract composition by Sam Francis, featuring layered blue pigments and gestural drips that create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Sam Francis, an American painter associated with the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, produced this work during his formative years in Paris. The composition is defined by a dense accumulation of blue pigment, applied with a gestural fluidity that characterises his approach to the canvas. Francis often allowed paint to drip and pool, creating a sense of movement that suggests both weight and transparency. While the title references red, the primary visual experience is dominated by deep, saturated blues that occupy the majority of the pictorial space.
His technique involves layering washes of colour, which allows light to reflect through the various applications of paint. This method creates a sense of atmospheric depth, rather than a flat surface. The drips, which descend from the concentrated areas of pigment, provide a rhythmic structure to the otherwise chaotic arrangement of colour. By avoiding rigid forms, Francis invites the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the medium itself. The work reflects his interest in the interplay between void and mass, a concept he explored throughout his career. His time in Japan also influenced his aesthetic, particularly in his use of negative space and the deliberate placement of colour. This piece captures the energy of his early 1950s output, where he moved away from structured geometric shapes toward a more fluid, organic application of paint. The result is a composition that feels both expansive and contained, demonstrating his ability to balance intensity with a controlled, almost meditative, process of creation.
